Complicating the narrative, this assumed symbol of Mexican identity – perceived as a threat to American culture by racists and xenophobes – does not speak Spanish, was born in Texas, and has a father who served in the US Navy for 21 years. Condensing his story into an anecdote could provide you with a strong hook to frame the rest of your argument on assimilation (you could potentially employ it to argue nearly any angle to the question). Even if you don’t use it in your essay directly, it’s a fascinating story and can deepen your understanding of both “assimilation” and “American.”
