About Mr. Rosentel

pin.jpegHailing from Newtown, CT, I traveled 861 miles to study political science at Northwestern University, just north of Chicago, on my westward path to law school. After graduating June 2006 with a degree in history (much more interesting and boasting better professors than poli sci), I veered 997 miles back east with my sight set on teaching. While teaching kids Honors US Government and US History II at TechBoston Academy in Dorchester, MA, I received my Master of Education degree [Ed.M.] in the Teacher Education Program at Harvard Graduate School of Education. Backtracking 980 miles to Chicago, I taught World Studies at Farragut Career Academy High School in Little Village four years ago. After hopping 1.5 miles north to Douglas Park, I then taught Social Studies at Collins Academy High School in North Lawndale.   Two summers ago, I went on a 2,635-mile road trip to get married in Santa Fe, NM and move to Champaign, IL, where I now teach 8th grade Social Studies and Enrichment at Franklin Middle School and coach the NOLA Debate Team.

I created this website for my students, to help them organize their assignments and keep them up-to-date on our classroom’s goings-on. So, cherubs, bookmark this page, check it regularly, comment if you have one, email me [c.rosentel@gmail.com] for any reason, think for yourselves, work for the community, keep critically questioning, argue vigorously, and be excellent to each other.

    • Happy holidays, Jessica.

It’s good to hear from you, particularly since I think about the Farragut crew often. I miss you guys (feel free to throw in an “aww” here), but have managed to stay in touch with a few cadets. Are you still considering a transfer to another high school? How is ROTC this year? How are Raul and Roxana? How’s US History? Keeping your grades up? Picking up your college search? Too many questions? Of course not.

Best wishes for the new year,
      Mr. Rosentel

  4. As I scramble to find something formal to wear to the military ball, I couldn’t help but remember you! How’s it going there Mr. Rosentel?! A surprise visit from you there would probably make a lot of students very happy! Hope your year is going well.
    Mrs. Morales
PS the students still miss you!

  5. Hi, Ms. Morales,

It’s great to hear from you. Right now, I’m actually a table away from Victor, Rudy, and the other debaters from Farragut. I’d love to visit one day, but at least I got to see some of my former kids this weekend at the Debate City Championships. My year is going well, but is exhausting. I’ll never forget my Farragut days, particularly that JROTC Military Ball. Take a stroll down memory lane here: http://picasaweb.google.com/c.rosentel/ROTCMilitaryBall#. Keep in touch, and say hi to teachers, Colonel, and my cadets for me.

    Mr. Rosentel

  6. Hi Mr. Rosentel. Long time no see…

  7. Hi, Eugenio,

Indeed, it has been a long time. I actually just saw Victor and some of my former cadets this weekend at the debate championships, and I wondered what you are up to. Still on pace to be valedictorian your senior year? How are your classes? Are you involved in any clubs? Collins Academy just finished up its first season of debate, but I also advise a group called the Student Ambassadors, whose mission is to collaborate and create peace between our school and North Lawndale College Prep, with whom we share a building. I still teach World Studies, but I’ve made it more contemporary this year as we study such events as the genocide in Sudan. I recommend the book They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky, one we read for the unit on Sudan. It’s about the Lost Boys of Sudan, who trekked 1,000 miles to escape the Sudanese Civil War that cost their families’ lives. Next month, one Lost Boy – now a man – will visit our school and speak to the students about his experiences. What have you been reading lately? Writing? Any recommendations for me?

Keep in touch, and good luck in your last quarter.

    Mr. Rosentel

  8. Hi Mr. Rosentel. Well yes I hope to be it by senior year, I know it will take a lot of work, but I know I can do it. Yeah they told me about the debate the day before they left and just today they filled us in about it, and actually Rudy, Victor and the others have persuaded me to join debate, probably by next year I will, I hope. Well my classes are going great I’ve learned so much and continue to learn even more! Well I’ve joined a team for the JROTC, which is sound and lights and the others have as well, George has become part of staff assistance as well others (Ivan, Pablo, Tania, and Angelica) which I have become good friends with this year. The book sounds good and similar to you we for American Lit. are reading a novel about the Vietnam war and how it affected people in it, its called the Things They Carried by Tim O’ Brien. Wow! You are actually going to met him, that really amazing. Anyways if you want to see more of the work we have done for American Lit. which to me is cool check our blogs, http://ramirezeugenio.blogspot.com/ through here you can find the others’ work as well. Also as a service learning project for us we are searching about the Medal of Honor, and making a book on it, almost all JROTC schools are doing one to see who wins and Chicago will hold a convention this year to present the book to people who have won the medal and Colonel hopes to get at least some of them to come to Farragut to met us and just see Farragut. I am I writing too much? If I am it is because I have so much to say that I need someone to tell it to! Because of that we are now in process of making the book and my team, Zoyla, Fabiola and me were chosen to write the final version of the chronological history of the Medal of Honor and I don’t know, but I think I was chosen to write the first essay that goes in front of the book. Now we are however going to do the essay again, but to win money………..So how is it going there? How are your students?

  10. Hello Mr.Rosentel,

My name is Sierra Benson and although you may not know me or remember me, I certainly remember you. My locker was outside your classroom the 2010-2011 school year at Franklin Middle School. I was the weird girl with a green lunchbox, green coat, come to think of it I had a green everything! Yes well speaking of my green lunchbox, I do remember me in a little misunderstanding with a hall monitor during lunch. I was going the opposite direction to the lunch room because I had to get my lunchbox first. In which case you tried to assist me there while I told you otherwise and fidgeted the combination to my evidence. I suppose I proved my evidence quite rudely in your face as I walked off and for that I sincerely apologize. As for my green coat, I only remember a mere compliment from you as I staggered home. I’m usually not well self esteemed.
To tell you a little bit about myself I have a great voice and no I’m not talking about singing, although some claim I also have a great singing voice too, I’m talking about writing. I personally enjoy Adult Fiction, Science Fiction, Narratives, Poems, a lot of variety to write from. However I know you are a Social Studies teacher and I love history! It is like the back bone to my well being. I think I also enjoy it so much because I wish I were there, I wish I were there to leave a legacy. That is my soul desire.
I could have been in enrichment if I wasn’t in band. I’m actually not fond with band and have been fed up with it for 4 years on the clarinet so this highscool year I’m going to try guitar. I figure I’d rather play music I know as opposed to music from strange old dead guys. Being intuned with history helps me understand the true passionate eras of rock n’ roll and I’m also considered weird for my severe interest in music mostly unknown.
Me being a teenager I’m sassy and resistant, what teenager isn’t? Therefore I would have loved to join the debate team with you. I’m a natural at arguing my opinion but not thoroughly since I don’t expect most to comprehend it.
Well Mr.Rosentel I do wish I had made a better impresion for you and that maybe we could have talked more about history during the morning like you did with my friend LarTerrious on the bleechers. Once I was eavse dropping out of curiosity, I’m not quite sure the conversation but I do know LarTerrious was talking about I think an African religion, or just religion in general, in which being gay becomes an issue. It’s upsetting because my Great Uncle was a gay artist and judging by his paintings I say he was a fairly good one too. What I mean is maybe people can’t be exact in one way yet they can be in another way, so there should be no punishment when everybody can’t always be everything. I can’t understand how this would be innapropriate but I hope it wasn’t innapropriate of me to write this message.
Hope the 2011-2012 year is just as good, or even better! That is if you are staying at Franklin Middle School… Oh and I’m not a teacher so I don’t know if you guys stay around an extra week to clean your classrooms out for the summer or not but if so I assume you know Ms. Atkinson and please tell her that I already miss her.

    • Hi, Sierra,

Of course I remember you and your green ensemble. I appreciate your comments, but wish I knew about your talents sooner. With such phrases as “fidgeted the combination to my evidence,” you demonstrate your unique writing voice, which would have been an asset in my Enrichment class (sadly not possible as you were on South) or on the Debate Team. If you’re attending Central next year, I would love to have you check out the NOLA Debate Team, composed of Central students, whom I coach. I’ll pass along your message to Ms. Atkinson, and I wish you a restful summer with time to further develop your voice and to rouse it from the page to our ears.

      Mr. Rosentel
